Walking with Magdalena

I am trying to be a little more consistent in my contributions to this blog. Julie has done such an amazing job of writing from her heart that I don't always feel that I can contribute much of substance. But as Magdalena's father, I want to share from a little different perspective. This is the latest...

As the weather has gotten a little cooler recently, I have started to go for walks with Magdalena in the afternoons. It has become one of my favorite things to do. She seems to enjoy it as well. It is so much fun wrapping her up and carrying her around and talking to her about all the things that we see. We pretty much only stay in the area of the townhomes, but there is still a lot to see and discuss. Her eyes go all over that place as she tries to take it all in. The other day, she was very fussy and upset so I decided that it would be a great time to go for a walk. She was crying loudly as we went out the door and then her whole demeanor changed as she recognized that we were outside where there is so much to see. She stopped crying and was so happy and content. Usually on our walks, we talk about cars that pass by, grills and other things on the porches, toys that are left out, the birds that are flying over us and the beauty of the blue sky, to name a few things. But, I think, the best part of our walks is when we get to meet the fascinating people that live in the townhomes. Some I know from school or from other places, but many I don't. Magdalena loves to meet them all. It is so great to meet somebody, as happened on our first walk, who had never met Magdalena but had heard of her and had been praying for her regularly. This dear woman said that she was so honored to actually meet Magdalena and couldn't wait to tell her friends. We have met others who didn't know of Magdalena yet, but they all fell in love with her right away and they all got Magdalena's business cards to be able to read up on her. It has also been great to see friends from the seminary who had heard of Magdalena, been praying for her regularly, but had never met her in person. It's so much fun to see how much they care about her.

These walks are such a blessing and I am so thankful for the time that we get to spend together.

I pray for yout sweet family daily, and most def. check in on you daily to see if i can see an update and an amzing new picture of your Magdalena. She is beautiful. I wish I could kiss her tiny cheeks, and smell her sweet smell.

I wish that each family who is handed such a diagnoses during pregnancy could be given your site....the hope you provide is immeasurable. Every life deserves the chance your family and the lord have provided Magdalena with. i was given such a grim outlook with my daughter and faught against the norm too give her life, not take it away. I was blessed to hold my little girl for 4 hours on a warm summer night after she came way too early to survive, I wouldnt change a single thing. I praise you and have forever been changed by your story, and will never forgoet your tiny bundle of life......

May you continue to have the grace and strength to get through the tough times, and keep up with her quickly growing body by feeding her the right amounts. You are doing the most amazing job as a mother.....keep on keeping on....you are blessed beyond measure! and a huge thank you for sharing your special moments with all of us.

    Shae....

  8. What sweet daddy daughter time. You guys are doing such a great job of living and treasuring each moment and day. Little Magdalena is a miracle baby and as a previous comment said every parent given the grim diagnosis of T-18 should see what a blessing your little girl is and have hope that they too might take their baby for walks. God Bless you and little Magdalena. Thanks again for sharing her ;)

Magdalena Grace Roberts

This morning Magdalena left this world to be with Jesus. There really isn't too much else I can say but to please pray for Julie and Noah. For now, they do not want any calls, emails or visits. I will you keep you updated on the arrangements.

Making the Decision to Not Make the Decision

I get the question, "Are you going to have any more kids?" asked often. Since finding out Magdalena's diagnosis it was always a tough question to answer. We had always envisioned ourselves with multiple children, but there was always the lingering thought of having to endure this difficult situation again. Although it is less than a one percent chance that we would have another child with T18, the percentage still exists. When pregnant, I said multiple times that I couldn't do this again and my mom constantly reminded me that it is not always that difficult. Being pregnant was physically uncomfortable, but I was referring to the constant emotional exhaustion. As Magdalena continued to do well, Noah and I weren't sure when to begin thinking about other children. Noah and I discussed that I would work really hard at losing my weight, but I was willing to be five pounds more than what I was originally. People poked fun at my not eating Magdalena's birthday cakes...
