Proudest Moment

You wouldn't believe that Magdalena is watching the movie Nemo right now! She is lying on a colorful mat watching a brightly colored movie, and she is loving every moment of it! She has done her neck workout by lying on her belly with me assisting her in a lift. She is trying so hard! On Wednesday we went to see Magdalena's pediatrician, Dr. Brooks, who was so proud (along with us) at how well she was doing. With her encouragement we gave Magdalena two of the four needed immunizations. She said that she is still doing so well that we would hate for her to get something preventable. I teared up not ready for it, but Magdalena showed what a big girl she is! One of the medicines she readily sucked down by mouth and the other, which was a shot, didn't make her cry too much. Then, because she had pulled out her tube that morning, we left for another area of the hospital to have someone in the GI department replace her tube. This nurse was so helpful and informative. She put in a slightly larger tube, and she helped us learn how to feed her better. We have a few goals now. Again, Magdalena was incredible!

With Dr. B's help there are a few things that we are going to begin doing. First, we are going to revisit the cardiologist. Earlier when I decided that we no longer wanted to spend time in the doctor's office we had no idea that Magdalena would be at the point she is today. We think that it would be good to see what has changed so that we know when minor things occur, such as colds, what we can do without hurting the heart worse. Second, Magdalena is going to have a swallow test done on Christmas Eve morning to see what thickness she can swallow. This will allow the speech therapist to know how to help Magdalena take a bottle better and maybe....take a bit of food. We will have to wait and see! There are a few other interventionists that Magdalena will begin to see to help her improve physically!

I am not feeling overly hopeful. I feel proud. This is the proudest that I have ever felt in my life. My little girl is such a fighter.

Uncle Stephen and Loli got some of Caroline and Emma's old clothes out for Magdalena to borrow since she has outgrown her Premie clothes. We had to roll the sleeves up a bit, but I think she feels more comfortable in these clothes!
Look at Magdalena being a big girl taking her immunization by mouth! I think this nurse was surprised that I wanted to take a picture!
Magdalena's new tube requires the feeder to hold up the formula-filled syringe. It really doesn't have to be held this high, but look at Papa working so hard! The picture is kind of blurry because I had to sneak to take it!
After her doctor visits we went to see Kameron. Magdalena met her once before when she first came home, so it was like meeting her for the first time. You can tell how much she likes her! Look at that face! When I picked her up she started to be a little restless because she wanted to stay there!

  1. I'm so happy that she got a good report from the Dr. and a better tube. I know how difficult tube feeds are, because mine take between 3-4 hrs, for an 8oz can of formula. But, I have a different tube placement than she does. Mine goes straight into my small intestine.
I am glad that she enjoys watching Nemo, I love that movie!

Can I also ask for prayers for me, as my health continues to be on a roller coaster ride.
    Thx

  4. YaY! What a big girl! I love hope and it is the season for it. :0) She is looking so good.

On a side note...I picked up a trick from you and had to say "thanks!". My daughter is gravity fed bolus feedings during the day and on a pump at night. She was very ill last week and while waiting to be admitted to the hospital I wanted to slowly feed her. I had seen your syringe with the plunger in...in some of your pics. NOT having my pump..I tried it that way and...it was perfect! I could manage her rate beautifully. Thank you so much!
:0) (BTW she is feeling better now)
    Merry Christmas!!!

You don't know me, but I have been following your blog for some time now- I found your blog on the page of my sister-in-law, Lisa Christian. I have been so fascinated for so long that I actually have read every entry you've posted since you found out you were pregnant and learning of Magdelena's condition. I am writing to tell you how touched I have been to follow this and to see her progress. She looks beautiful! She is gaining weight and that looks great on her! Know that I am praying for you (the parents and family) and her. I believe God is keeping this little life here a little longer for very special reasons- only reasons you may know a long time from now as well, as in the present. I will certainly stay posted on her story of life! Thankyou for sharing this with so many people. It is truly a testimony that we can perservere through the tough times and we know that God will help us along the way. God Bless!

This morning Magdalena left this world to be with Jesus. There really isn't too much else I can say but to please pray for Julie and Noah. For now, they do not want any calls, emails or visits. I will you keep you updated on the arrangements.

Making the Decision to Not Make the Decision

I get the question, "Are you going to have any more kids?" asked often. Since finding out Magdalena's diagnosis it was always a tough question to answer. We had always envisioned ourselves with multiple children, but there was always the lingering thought of having to endure this difficult situation again. Although it is less than a one percent chance that we would have another child with T18, the percentage still exists. When pregnant, I said multiple times that I couldn't do this again and my mom constantly reminded me that it is not always that difficult. Being pregnant was physically uncomfortable, but I was referring to the constant emotional exhaustion. As Magdalena continued to do well, Noah and I weren't sure when to begin thinking about other children. Noah and I discussed that I would work really hard at losing my weight, but I was willing to be five pounds more than what I was originally. People poked fun at my not eating Magdalena's birthday cakes

Hello World!!

Here are my first pictures! Julie is on her way to the room and doing great. As we have more pictures, I will get them up for you to see. Stephen
