This was definitely the most special Christmas I have ever had, and because it was filled with many happenings I will have to post in segments. We began our morning on Christmas Eve with a visit to the hospital...don't worry it was a happy visit. At the children's hospital Magdalena had a test done to see if she had any problems when swallowing. The speech therapist made Magdalena little barium/formula tasters of different thicknesses to see what she was able to handle.
Magdalena could not eat in the morning so that she would want to be able to take a lot of food by mouth. She was so sweet, and instead of crying she slept peacefully while waiting for her turn.

Here Magdalena was telling us that she had had enough, and that it was time to fill the belly! Look at how cute her face looks when she cries!

She was so happy to be fed, and she did a great job! When they handed me the spoon my heart was filled to the brim with emotion because it was the first time that she would eat with a spoon. Oh, my sweet, big girl.....

Oh, my sweet, big girl.....I can't really explain what is going on in this x-ray, but I wanted you to be able to see what the speech therapist looked at while I gave Magdalena some food.
Later on in the day we went to my grandmother's house to celebrate Christmas with my dad's side of the family. While there the speech therapist called me with some amazing news....Magdalena passed her test! She could begin eating rice cereal! We are still practicing, so she eats about a tablespoon before we bottle feed. She is doing so well!
Please pray for Magdalena while she suffers through the teething process. She can't hold some of the teethers, so we found one that I can put on my finger. It massages while she gnaws on it. At night though....whew...there are a lot of tears shed, and all of us are lacking sleep.
Oh, what wonderful news. It's nice that the speech therapist called you right away, instead of you having to wait for a report or something. I love her hungry, angry, crying face! What a temper!
ReplyDeleteI hate my kids to have pain, too; especially babies, because they can't even tell you if it's ear, mouth, stomach, and even if they can, you can't explain why they just have to wait it out. I wish we could just give them something really powerful to fix wherever the pain is ... you know, morphine, whatever. (just kidding!) But you know, just take that pain away!
Julie, I am so impressed. Magdalena is already ahead in the eating area and the teething. Annabel did not cut her first two until 16 mths., so she is right on target! Yea! Also the eating was after she was a year. We tried so hard and she just wouldn't have anything to do with it. I am so proud of your little angel. You are doing everything for your precious little to have such a good life. I enjoy reading about her and your day to day adventures. Thank you for taking the time to share her glorious life with us.

ReplyDeleteI have had success with those helping out. One of my triplets cut 4 molars all within 2 weeks and the other two haven't even started getting molars yet.

I am a mum of 3 who is rom the UK but now livs in snowy Canada. I am in wonder of your precious daughter and check daily on her progress. I wondered if you knew anything about Cranial Sacral (I know you will google this now). They do amazing work and we were blessed to have visited the hospital that had Diana as their patron shortly before she died. I would not let any of my children (who I must say are all happy and healthy) be operated on before they had a consultation with our own Cranial Sacral lady. They do amazing things (get rid of glue ear without medication or any tubes)They have a "Gift" from God and their wish is to be in every delivery room. The trauma a baby goes thru during th birth process is profound and somehow they get all the fluid in their bodies flowing properly by just their gentle hands..... If I can be th one that opened your eyes and heart to this wonderful profesion my job is done... I feel any help Magdalena can get will help her defy the odds even more. With kind regarsds Gillian
ReplyDeleteCONGRATS MAGDALENA on the rice cereal! Julie. When my kiddos were little, they LOVED if I would take a toddler toothbrush and brush their gums gently when they were teething. It's even a good way to apply baby orajel (which I don't know if she can have)... Also, there is a GREAT organic teething tablet I need to tell you about -- you can check to make sure she can have it, but it worked great with both of my kiddos!
ReplyDeleteChild passenger safety technician chiming in here on the picture of Magdelena in her car seat - the harness looks to be too loose on her. You want it snug enough that if you try to pinch the harness strap horizontally at her collarbone, you cannot get the webbing to meet together. Also, the headrest insert is a no- no as it did not come with the seat. Rolled up receiving blankets are recommended to support her head if needed.
